The Alabama Technology Transfer (T2) Center, located on the campus of Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama, was created to bring the newest developments in technology to state and local public works agencies in Alabama. The Center combines the resources of three organizations:
The mission of the Center is to provide training and information to assist public works, highway or transportation agencies plan, manage and execute their programs as a part of the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) of FHWA. The Center also provides assistance to the ALDOT in administering the Rural Transit Assistance Program (RTAP) of FTA and maintains the Alabama RTAP website.
Training seminars are a part of the T2 Center using the expertise of professionals from throughout the region. Topics covered in the past by Alabama LTAP seminars have included value engineering, public works management, railroad highway grade crossing improvements, local road supervisor skills, standards for land surveyors, retaining wall design, slope maintenance, traffic control in construction, maintenance and utility operations, storm water control, and management techniques. Seminars are taught at locations throughout Alabama.
The Center has an extensive library of publications and videotapes. Library holdings are distributed free of charge to users in Alabama. Included in the library are publications from the Highway Research Center, which is based at Auburn University. Publications available from the Center are listed in the newsletter. Videotapes are loaned from a collection of over 300 titles covering both management and technical topics. A catalog listing the videotapes can be obtained from the Center. The catalog will be mailed via surface mail.
The Center publishes the Alabama Transportation Newsletter for Alabama LTAP with topics of interest in managing, performing and evaluating public works functions. The newsletter is distributed primarily to agencies and individuals in Alabama and to all other centers in the United States. Articles originate in Alabama or are compiled from other sources in engineering and public works periodicals. The newsletter also lists many of the materials available from the Center. The most recent newsletter can be obtained from the Center.
Frequently, the Center receives literature about a public relations or awareness campaign for a specific safety topic. Passing these materials on to local agencies is sometimes difficult to do in a timely manner, so a link is provided to the calendar on the website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration. From this NHTSA Safe Communities Calendar, there are links to the organizations that are champions for events such as "Buckle Up America Week", "Child Passenger Safety Week", and "School Bus Safety Week". The dates of the events and the locations of any special activities are also shown on the calendar. Other national events are:
The Center assists in making the arrangements for the Alabama Transportation Conference. Over 500 transportation officials are anticipated to attend from local, county and state agencies in the state. The 50th annual Alabama Transportation Conference will be held on February 20 & 21, 2007, in Auburn, AL.
The Alabama T2 Center is a member of the Alabama Struck By Alliance. The purpose of this Alliance is to provide awareness of struck by hazards and to promote safe work practices. Members of the Alliance include the Alabama Association of General Contractors (AGC), Alabama Department of Transportation, Alabama Technology Transfer (T2) Center, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Lamar Advertising, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Safe State, 3M Worldwide Corporation and The Alabama Road Builders Association. Activities of the Alliance have included participation in National Work Zones Awareness Week, conducting training seminars on work zone traffic control, and the design & placement of a billboard calling attention to safe temporary traffic control for hurricane responders. Further information on the Alliance is available on the Alabama Struck By Alliance webpage of this Alabama T2 website.
